Doubling is the easy part of this cube action. Blue is threatening to put more checkers on the bar or make his deuce point with 29 numbers on his next roll.

However, I think White has enough defensive resources for a close take. He has a broken five-prime and a four point board which will make it not so easy for Blue to escape his back checkers or attack when White re-enters from the bar. In the very next sequence where Blue fails to hit with 43, 44, 31 or 63, White is already the favorite if he doesn't dance. Even if Blue hits or build the deuce point, White should be able to put up some resistance. In trying to understand a position, I like to look at variants and whether changing one feature will have a signficant impact on the assessment of the situation. For example, I move one checker from Blue's 22 point back to the 24 point. Now it looks like a very easy take, if not a premature redouble. Of course I realize this shift of one checker could be so big that this is not a relevant comparison. But it is definitely worth considering when making an unclear or borderline decision.

The interesting variants are: 1. Move one Blue checker from the 22 point to the 24 point. 2. Move the Blue checker from the 24 point to the 22 point. 3. Move the White spare checkers on the 4 point to the 5 and 6 point. 3. Shift Blue's 8 point to the bar point.
