This morning I was working with a student on some positions where you have to calculate whether it is right to stay to get off the gammon, or run to be sure not to get backgammoned. After the lesson I gave him 10 positions to work out on his own and I gave him this advice:
"Take your time and work through the details. If you come up with the answer quickly, then you probably haven't really looked at all the possible rolls and calculated the odds. At the end of an hour you should be tired, otherwise, you know you weren't doing it right. Sort of like sex."
