Assuming standard rules and that both players have a clue and someone cubes at he first chance for a market loser, the match will end 100% of the time with this game.
Now lets assume Phil's variation. Each player has a 14% chance to win the match with a G in game one. So 72% of the time the match goes to 2a1a. 14% of that time the trailer will win a G ending the match and 50% of that time the leader will win and end the match.
That means 36% of those 72% matches or 26% of all matches take 3 games.
So for Phil's variation 28% of the matches end in one game with a G. 46% of the matches end in 2 games, and 26% of the matches take 3 games.
That's a major reason why this hasn't been adopted ! It simply results in some tight matches taking too much more time than they'd take under the current rule.
Please realize that a match that's been played to 2a2a is often one of the last matches of the round to finish anyhow and to often extend it further can slow down the event and also result in some players waiting an extra half hour or so to start their next round. Of course clocks can help speed the situation and may result in both players basically playing speed gammon from 2a2a.
But Phil's variation does seem like it might make for a more interesting and challenging match and also favor the better player a bit more.
