I would be willing to bet that a given player will generally have a much worse PR defending a back game than playing one in most cases. But either way, I see Gary's point. Do we want the clock to be that big a determinant as to who wins? Except in pure speedgammon, probably not, and even with speedgammon, we would rather see the better player who can play fast win, as opposed to someone winning by running out of time.
