There was an illegal move made in the match between Mochy and Aref Alipour at the London Open on Saturday. The illegal move occurs at the 2:41:05 mark of the video stream labeled “Saturday Session 1.” It is hard to navigate directly to that time. The easiest way to see the play is to begin at 2:39:35, and watch three plays: 1. Aref plays 55, 2. Mochy plays 22, and 3. Aref plays 33.

Aref plays his 33 by moving 21/15(2). In the process, he knocks his own blot on the 16pt out of position. Although the checker is left more on the 16pt than the 17pt, it is clearly straddling both points. Before rolling on the next turn, Mochy straightens the checkers, moving Aref’s checker onto the 17pt. Neither players nor commentator Zoe Cunningham notice the error. Bob Wachtel reported the error in the social stream accompanying the video, saying, “Mochy moved opponent's checker from 16 pt to 17 pt! Made an illegal play.” Alerted to the error, Zoe reports it at the 2:48:30 mark of the video.

After Mochy plays a 43, Aref rolls 53. Because his checker had been illegally placed on the 17pt, Aref was able to play 17/12, 15/12, making a point in front of Mochy’s runner. He later hit that runner, and went on to win the game. The victory broke an 8-8 tie, pushing Aref into the Crawford game, which he also won.

Mochy was also involved in an illegal move at last month’s Nordic Open.
