X (Hit and split) = 24/21, 8/2*

I took a look at running, R = 24/15, but rejected it. It leaves 26 shots. Admittedly, there are no “good” plays for Yellow here, and running could turn out to be the best of a bad lot.

My preference, however, it to hit loose on the 2pt, and then figure how to play the 3. I like the hit because it steals a tempo from Black, and also because Yellow has the better board. Left to his own devices, Black will try to hit and/or consolidate his already strong position, so I felt that striking the first blow was essential.

For the 3, I was not sure whether to play down from the midpoint or to move the back checker up to the 21pt. Standard tactics against a prime dictate moving into escape position, and that it what I finally decided upon, but I worry that doing so increases the number of return shots available to Black. If playing down resulted in something better than just another blot, I probably would have made that play.

Hitting and playing down, H = 13/10, 8/2*, looks like the QF move in this position!

Mike
