Legal Moves anecdodal (sp) Data

1. If you were playing this same person on a computer, there would be no legal moves. So the result of the match would be determined by luck and skill within the rules. If the legal moves if applied properly, that should be the same outcome for live matches. So for this reason, I would not feel so bad if my correcting an illegal play cost me the game or match...I should have lost it anyway.
2. If a person makes a lot of illegal moves, in the long run as many should be in his favor to correct as against him to correct, so it should even out. If someone consistently makes illegal moves that are in his favor, I would get quite suspicious. I don't necessary think that person is cheating, because if you want to hit or make a point and focus on that you could easily think a roll that doesn't do that does do that. For example, if you tell yourself you can hit with an 8, and you roll 4-4, you might well hit not realizing the 4 is blocked...honest mistake.
3. The argument that you should not have to help your opponent win is one of the strongest arguments people make against the legal move rule. I think it is a valid argument. I don't LOVE having to help my idiot opponent who forgets to pick up a checker he had to hit. I think this truly is a negative of the legal move rule. I am willing to grant that argument to the "other side." But it is all the other things that happens because of non-legal moves that hurt the game and the attitudes and "sportsmanship" of the game that sway me to the other side. I believe Legal Moves has some faults, but it is simply the lesser of two evils.
4. One other problem with legal moves: if my opponent makes an illegal move and it is a bad play for him, and I honestly don't catch it and play on, someone might think I am a cheater. So now I'm the bad guy because I didn't catch it. I would hate to be streamed in the finals of a major tournament and win the match because I failed to correct an illegal, bad play of my opponent, and have the whole world talk about what a cheater I am. And that is just one more reason why I think we can help take the burden off the players by assigning an official to monitor major matches...finals and semifinals...if one is available, and he should be allowed and required to point out illegal moves as well as make sure the score is right, the clock is proper, and that there are no other infractions (fast-rolling, illegal rolling or checker movement, illegal use of the cube, etc. etc.).
