if someone were transcribing the match while it was being played, the transcriber is supposed to alert the players that there was an illegal move

Is that a rule anywhere? I don't think I've seen it.

It could be a good rule (for computer-aided transcriptions), as long as it is clearly spelled out how it works, and the players, the transcriber, and the TD are all on the same page.

if ... my opponent agrees, I would have no problem at all designating one of the spectators that we both agree on to alert us about legal moves. That removes some of the pressure on both players

What if the players agree to have a spectator keep a running pip count that both players have continuous access to? That would relieve pressure on the players too.
