In Response To: Why we should publicize our illegal moves (Tom Keith)

What if we don't actually care about the parameters of the "current debate", but about the general idea of making backgammon play as free from illegal moves as possible.

I don't understand why you would hold a position that spectators should by definition never say anything, period, end of story, no discussion needed, when it seems possible to develop a culture, whereby spectators could be used to point out illegal moves without unduly disrupting matches.

Here's a rough first crack at guidelines that would seem to work among people of goodwill (I am not yet suggesting it as a ruleset, that requires a lot more detailed consideration, only as a framework):

1. Spectactors are generally allowed to point out illegal plays as advice only. Players may accept or reject the advice by agreement, and make their own decision. If a spectator's notice results in a disagreement between players that cannot be resolved, one may call the director.

2. Both players can agree to request no spectator input at any time, unless the director has specifically appointed a spectator as a monitor for the match.

3. Both players can agree to request no input from specific spectators, or only input from specific spectators at any time, and may reverse this decision by agreement at any time.

4. The director may bar input from specific or all spectators, or appoint a willing spectator as a monitor at any time.

What are the specific problems you see potentially occurring with a ruleset framework like this? Do you think they'd be impossible to work around? Do you see no potential benefit?
