I think you would be very hard pressed to find anyone that thinks Backgammon is a sport.

My suggestion was that something to this effect could be written into the rules of tournaments where penalty points are enforced in case someone feels strongly that they do not want to take penalty points against an opponent.

Having read some of the responses here, I think a better solution would be what Chiva said, simply start the clock.
