"Either 5pt beats either 4pt" has been extensively tested by Nack, and has only a few exceptions in the first few rolls of the game. You can find discussion in the BGO archives by searching for that phrase.

The choice between the 20pt and the 5pt is much more subtle and I don't think that "home 5 is better than away 5" is true often enough to be a useful rule of thumb. See for example this post (and the links therein) for a discussion of the families 41S-xxx-43 and 43Z-xxx-41.

I think it is a reasonable rule to say that home 5 wins more gammons and usually wins slightly more games, while away 5 loses a lot fewer gammons. That will often be enough to choose between the two, but not always.
