As an example of poor user interface design, consider the File > Save command in GnuBg. I would go so far as to describe the implementation as amateurish.
- There is no File > Save. More precisely, File > Save is treated as File > Save as. This is fine the first time you save a new file, but is does not conform to standard usage for a file that has already been saved and already has a name. File > Save should operate “silently,” without showing the Save As dialog box, for a file that already has a name.
- There is no separate File > Save as command.
- If you exit GnuBg immediately after saving a file, it asks you, “Are you sure you want to discard the current match?” Huh? I just saved it. Please do not discard it.
- If you save a file, and then use File > New so that you can set up a new position, GnuBg keeps the file name of the old file. If you are not careful, it is easy to overwrite the old the file when you save the new one. I have done this many times. GnuBg should do what XG does. Offer a numbered, generic name for any new position you create. This is beginner’s stuff.
In addition to these problems, there are a host of little things that XG just does better. I’ll give you just two examples.
- When you are closed out on the bar, but still have cube access, in XG you can click a “no-double” icon so that you do not have to click every turn. Very convenient.
- The Eval Panel in XG uses a large, readable font for moves and a small font for percentages. I frequently struggle to read the small typing in GnuBg.
