Xavier and his product eXtreme Gammon are hardly what I'd call a greedy developer or over priced product. Quite the opposite, it is so reasonably priced many people have suggested he under priced his product. He has been on top of tech support from the beginning like no other developer and I don't foresee any time in the near future that he stops improving XG and leaves us all lost as you suggest. Even if he did cut tail and run, the version of XG I have right now I'd be very happy with for the rest of my bg career.
GNU is great. Many people have dedicated their time and support to GNU with no compensation and that's amazing and appreciated. People have also done this in a much lesser capacity to further the amazeballness of XG. Any time someone asks about backgammon bots I suggest quoting the unbeatable price tag. I then follow that up with the perks of XG and why I think it is without question worth the price tag. The speed of XG alone compared to GNU is like a foot race between myself and MCG. GNU is strong but not quite the playing strength of XG. I am in full agreement with Taper_Mike that XG's inferface is superior. I used Jellyfish, I used Snowie. I used GNU and now I use XG. I used them all way too much and I would consider GNU a bit clunky.
