I've tried that before. I'd estimate that that works about 80% of the time, whereas saving and reloading has (so far) worked 100% of the time.
To confirm this, I decided to try Stick's suggestion during my latest copy&paste session. It works worse than I remembered. What I found this time was that removing a checker and putting it back on the board does indeed cause the "Score" labels on the diagram to switch to "Pips", which looks good. However, if I ask for an evaluation, and then save the file, the next time I reload the file, I discover that it did not actually switch to an unlimited game, but saved the ATS position.
The other thing is that if I follow Stick's recommendation, the next time I copy and paste a position, the same problem will recur. If I do my save-and-reload procedure instead, it seems to reset XG in some sense, so that I can enjoy correct behavior for a while before the problem recurs.
