I'm fine with the current Crawford rule but your idea is worth trying out.
I am ambivalent about any change in general. For example, I like playing backgammon on a computer as it avoids several problems of normal play. No issues about legal moves, premature rolls, legal rolls, dice flying off the board, checker shuffling etc., and a built-in clock. However, I also like shaking the dice longer and more vigorously when I think I am getting bad rolls (usually it's just bad play). More importantly, I would hate to put my backgammon sets away on the shelf along with my chess sets just to gather dust.
