Got it! I should not need help with this. I know without having to analyze anything that 1a-3a and 1a-5a play like DMP. Obviously, 1a-7a, and to a lesser extent, all other 1a-ODDa scores also play like DMP.

For the sake of simplicity, let’s assume the trailer does not win any gammons after the initial game. Furthermore, assume the trailer auto-cubes in all post-Crawford games. Then, at 1a-3a, the trailer needs 2 consecutive wins whether he wins a gammon in the initial game or not. At 1a-5a, the trailer needs 3 consecutive wins whether he wins a gammon in the initial game or not. Similarly, at 1a-7a, the trailer needs 4 consecutive wins.

As you pointed out, the only thing the trailer earns when he wins a gammon instead of a single win in the initial game is to take away the leader’s free drop. Therefore, we need not fear losing a gammon, and should play like that. We just need to be careful not to lose a backgammon.

You suggestion to follow Stick’s lead make sense in this context, as well. He is the DMP king!

Thanks for the explanation.

Mike
