Some thoughts about retrograde backgammon

In chess each of the thirty-two units starts off on its own square and thus has a unique "identity". In backgammon the fifteen checkers of each side are placed on four different points; thus a checker can be identified as either a back checker, a mid-point checker, 8 point or 6 point checker.
Is "perfect" play required or just legal moves?
