31P Nactation

I’d like to second an observation of Nack’s, and add a point of my own.

Although no systematic effort has yet begun, a large number of third-roll positions are being assembled and rolled out. By the time a comprehensive collection is complete, there will be tens of thousands of files involved. With such large numbers, it is essential to have systematic naming conventions. For now, at least, that means sticking to 31P, 42P, and the like, even when a move is obvious.

Hand transcriptions, I think, are another thing. if you are writing down the moves of a games as you watch, really anything is fine. Writing 31 for an opening move is all you need. I use a mixture of Nactation and my own self-styled shorthand when I make hand transcriptions. Often that means using the shorthand tricks that predate Nactation. Afterwards, however, when I am entering a sequence on the computer, I convert it to standard Nactation.
