1) Yes, the back checkers are ones on the 24 point in the starting position. That is, there are four "kinds" of checkers: back checkers, mid-point, 8 point and 6 point.

2) The identity of a checker becomes muddled when it lands on a point already occupied by another kind of checker. The bar is the 25 point.

I know all this sounds strange but in chess problem composition the rules can be even stranger and more stringent.
