I remember this problem from my many rereadings of Jeremy Bagai’s Classic Backgammon Revisited, so I won’t comment on the solution. In Jeremy’s book, this is Problem 96. Jeremy also cites the September 1992 issue of Chicago Point, where Walter Trice had a whack at it.
