Nice problem! Blue loses more gammons than I expected by staying back, making this a trickier problem than I expected. At DMP, it is clear to stay back in all your variants, but look for example at what happens in your original position if we change the score to 4a5a:

White is Player 2

score: 0
pip: 101
5 point match
pip: 145
score: 1

Blue is Player 1
