Variant Cube Actions (diagram cross-table) for Adv BG #155

This cube-action format is a brain-child of Paul Weaver.

Widen your window (or use the two-key combination of Ctrl- to zoom out) so that you see two diagrams side-by-side on each of the three rows. Notice that for each pair, the placements of Blue's floating blot/spare are one pip apart from each other.

The 2-by-3 crosstable of diagrams is laid out as follows:

.........14pt = closest pass.............13pt = closest take
...........9pt = closest redouble.........8pt = closest no-redouble
...........6pt = closest double ...........5pt = closest no-double

In other words, the three pairs represent (respectively) the pass/take cusp, the redouble/no-redouble cusp, and the double/no-double cusp, as Blue's blot/spare is nudged ever closer to the crash point (while everything else remains intact).

Nacubracs (nacbracs for cube actions) are captioned beneath the diagrams. The letter (D = Double, N = No double, R = Redouble, or X = no redouble) tells you the proper cube action for the player on roll. Assuming he chooses that action, and the cube (if turned) is taken, the first number is his absolute equity (in thousandths of a point). Subtracting the second number gives you his equity if he chooses the other (improper) cube action.

If the first number is higher than 1000 (i.e., 1.000), the player not on roll should of course pass. (This occurs only in the first position.) If it's below 1000, the proper action is to take.

Once you become accustomed to nacubracs (which appear within brackets in other types of charts and lists), you'll be able to digest and compare a lot of valuable information condensed into a few lines. For the captions here, Paul's rollout results are in black typeface (3-ply checker, roller cube, 1k trials). Igor's rollout results are in red typeface (4-ply checker, roller cube, 1k trials—except the fifth position is 2k trials).
