I agree that common sense should be used when you have time plus 1’s, 2’s, 3’s and 4’s to fill in the gaps.

Because we are likely to fill the gaps I would not penalise them and so just have a penalty of 4 from Isight calculated below :-

• 2 for extra checker on the one point • 2 extra crossovers

Total penalty 4. Bringing the pipcount to 80 to 87 or a difference of 7.

Now let us use the Chabot tables. This means that from 80 we go upto 84 meaning we need a lead of 6 pips or more to double. As we have 7 pips this is a double. What is interesting is if we had applied a penalty of 1 for one of the gaps (but not both due to time to fill them in) it would then be 81 to 87 which is just a double. The gap being on the 4 point is a very good argument for applying a 1 pip penalty above. Gaps on the 4 point last longer and are not as easily filled as gaps on the 3 point which are filled from the 6 point with missing 3's.

NO formula will ever be 100% correct and we do need to use some common sense.
