Process of elimination. We can't come in on the 20 with all that firepower aimed at us so we use the 3 to anchor up on the 22. With the 5 we either play 6/1, wasting our spare, or 13/8. Blotting our midpoint is not ideal but it beats the alternative so, as Mr. Holmes would say, once you've eliminated the moronic moves whatever remains, however shitty, must be the right one. Elementary.
