In Response To: Rockwell wins MN (Keene)

Congratulations to Mr. David Rockwell, who we may have to start calling Mr. Minnesota. He owns that place.

btw: I think it is VERY gracious of Keene to be the one to extend congratulations, as he suffered easily the worst beat of the tournament at the hands of the Champion. Leading 10-5 PC, (I believe). Keene had put three of David's checkers on the roof against his 5 point board, as he brought his stragglers home...

David entered all three with 33 while Keene navigated the outfield on his way home, and ultimately into the finals!

You'd think that an unlikely fly shot sank his ship in the deadly straights of the black outfield, but no. Despite producing a set of 5s during the bearoff, Keene was sadly unable to win the race! A thing that can only happen in backgammon.

As a matter of fact, David Rockwell fell just short of the infamous act of extending your hand to concede before taking a roll... Which became the first of two 55's. Showing his determination, he followed that with 66 and 11 to overcome Keene's set of lucky nickels in the bearoff. This merely set the stage for a no brainer gammon in the next game to display perfect efficiency.

In the finals Mr. Minnesota used the same recipe to defeat another up and coming star: Vadim Nuniyants. It may not have been as dramatic as the Keene way he destroyed Senor Marin, but it was equally devastating.

In the Nuniyants tradition, Vadim displayed great sportsmanship and grace. His father Stepan would have been very proud of him. He played great last weekend, but it was not in the cards... Because Mr. Minnesota had all the aces up his sleeve!

It was a fun tournament despite missing two regulars. Steve Brown had a lower leg amputated and decided to rest in the hospital instead of playing. He is doing very well and participated in a chouette hosted by Cinda King and Ed Z on Sunday evening. Also Jessie (I am an intermediate) Eaton didn't show due to a wedding of all things.

Come next year, its fun and the meatballs were excellent!
