It's verifiable. In any case, the majority of backgammon players don't attend "several" tournaments, unless several includes "two," which is doesn't.

The USBGF rating list presents the number of rated "events," not tournaments, attended. A player can participate in more than one rated event at a s single tournament.

In 2013, of 838 rated players, 384 (45.8%) participated in only one rated event. 187 (22.3%) participated in exactly two events. 571 (68.1%) participated in no more than two events. Only 31.9% participated in three or more events.

In 2012, of 848 rated players, 371 (43.7%) participated in only one event. 182 (21.5%) participated in exactly two events. 553 (65.2%) participated in no more than two events. Only 34.8% participated in three or more events.
