Another reason CPW is prominent has to do with the bots themselves. CPW, along with (cubeless) estimates of gammons won, backgammons won, gammons lost, and backgammons lost, are the raw numbers output by the neural nets that are the heart of GnuBg and XG. Converting them into cubeful, at-score estimates is done after the fact.
CPW has it's weaknesses and has been criticized before. Timothy Chow has written extensively about it in the past. Try searching Google for:
