In Response To: Basic Question about the Cube Information Dialog Box in XG (Kevin Finch)

The market windows are calculated based on a non- backgammon specific mathematical paradigm of "let's decide the outcome of the game right here, right now" (i.e. generate a random number and compare it to the game winning chances, settle the game now and move on to the next game). but in backgammon, the game result isn't forced there and then - your next roll will usually just increase or decrease your game winning chances incrementally, so you may have the opportunity to creep further up the window without overshooting the top of it, and thus have a safer, more efficient (but still correct) cube later, at no cost. The basic market window calculations don't allow for this. If you extend this idea to it's limit, so that the incremental changes to the game winning chances are infinitely small (called the "continuous model"), you end up with an infinitely narrow window (at the very top) because you would always be able to creep to the top of the window without worrying about overshooting it with market losers.
