The dead double point represents the minimum (not the appropriate) point where a correct double could be possible. You'd always prefer to double at your opponent's take point...which is why the opponent take point is the more important number to focus on. The doubling point becomes relevant only when you won't be able to reach that ideal timing of doubling right at the opponent's take point. For example, in a money game (dead minimum double point ignoring gammons is 50%), you would double in a last roll position when you are a 51% favorite.
Now regarding your question about live double point. I looked into this years ago for some non-backgammon related purpose...didn't understand it then...and don't understand it now. Here are some posts I made back in the past articulating my confusion:
