In Response To: Basic Question about the Cube Information Dialog Box in XG (Kevin Finch)

Thanks to everyone who weighed in here. I am not sure that I fully understand all of the arguments but I think that I get the general gist.

To the point that you have to take into account the volatility of a position when making a cube decision (point taken, by the way), it is interesting to note that even in non-volatile positions (straight races with all checkers in their respective inner boards) there is still this gap between the stated 'Double Point' in Cube Information and the actual correct double point. Also at slight variance with this interpretation of things is that XG makes the distinction between Gammon Adjusted and Non Gammon Adjusted Double and Take points - that would lead one to suppose that the particular volatility in a given position is accounted for in the numbers presented.

And with respect to the argument that the numbers given in Cube Information are more in the nature of 'the cube is then assumed to be removed from play', that is not the impression that XG gives you by making the distinction between 'Live Cube' and 'Dead Cube' numbers.

All of this is not to say that anyone is wrong. But I suppose it is to say that my overall takeaway here is that the data given in Cube Information has limited utility for making match cube decisions. What I was hoping for was something that could be used to give rough guidelines for double and take points at various match scores which could then be committed to memory. Of course this would just be a jumping off point since different positions would have different gammon potential, etc; but at least you would have something to build on.

Thanks again!
