I suspect there is a variation in approaches even among the top players. Some just ask themselves, "How does this situation compare with money play?" and then adjust their doubling/taking points up or down accordingly.

Others (most notably John O'Hagan) seem to be able to go through all necessary calculations with ease. I think this is something most people could do if they practiced enough. There are a lot of little tricks to make the process easier and often an approximate answer is sufficient. Use the search feature of this forum and search for messages posted anytime containing all of the following keywords: "John O'Hagan doubling window".
