I didn't like the way the finals was 21 points followed by an 11 point match. It seems like a better way to run it would be to have the second match be the long one, though I suppose in that format the undefeated player might want it the other way around...
But anyway, this was the World Championship and in the end, after longer matches all week long... The Championship was decided by an 11 point match?
There is something wrong with that. It should have been 17 points at least!
I suppose you want the best player to win, (in the big picture), and as I understand it, that was not the case. From what I heard they both played well, and very close to each other, but Doug Mayfield played better.
I didn't see the end of the match, but it sounds like it was a tough beat at the 11th hour in the last game.
Congratulations to Akiko Yazawa, a great player and quite probably the best woman player that has ever won the championship, with all due respect to Lee Genud and Katie Scalamndre. It is great for backgammon to see her win, and I felt kind of sorry for Doug who had little support with virtually everyone rooting against him.
The Japanese have demonstrated clearly that they have remarkable ability in this game. This is the third Japanese Champion in the last few years. It shows that hard work and study pay off... It was a riveting final and a real shame that anyone had to lose.
Nice run Doug, and Congratulations to Akiko: A truly deserving champion!
