IMO, there are top players who aren't good at catering to opponents and players who are good at catering to opponents who aren't necessarily the technically most skilled. It's a very different skill.

For a simple example, being able to tell when your opponent is going to drop your cube is something that you don't have to have a lot of technical knowledge of the game to be able to do reliably, and conversely, some technically skilled people suck at reading body language.
