Interesting ruling request in MC

I was kibitzing a neighboring combat when this situation came up in a match involving Tom Zarrinam and an angling opponent.

In the process of their match, a checker fell on the floor when resetting the board for a new game. The players took a break and returned, presumably both forgetting the the missing checker hadn't been retrieved. The match continued with 29 checkers, again apparently with neither player noticing that Tom was competing with only 14 (AFAIK a known disadvantage).

In a future game (possibly but not confirmed to be the next game), the checker deficit was noted. Tom's opponent argued that the previous game (which he had lost) shouldn't count. Tom said something like "well, this is why we have directors..." and they called James Baille. He confirmed that a missing checker has no affect on the game's outcome.

Not to be discouraged (but contradicting his previous logic), Tom's opponent now lobbied that Tom finish the match with only 14 checkers. Even James couldn't keep a straight face with this ludicrous request.

Unfortunately justice went unserved as Tom lost the match.
