Is it relevant that there are many things one can do that cost no practical against opponent game equity at all?

I) Against a top player one might double right away at odd away 1 away PC but waiting can get some more decisions.

II) If backgammon save is gin and gammon save is impossible keeping a checker on 20, 19, or 18 point can give an extra decision when opponent gets to 4 or fewer checkers. A similar situation can occur if gammon save is gin but winning game is impossible.

III) Suppose one has a closed board and hits a checker when opponent has 4 or fewer off. It is a cash but can roll a few turns at no risk of losing cash.

IV) If have a choice between one checker on each of ace and deuce point or a single checker on 3 point then the first option can give an extra decision (on aces other than 11)
