Reading this article by Kit Woolsey should get you started thinking in the right direction.

I would summarize the strategy of the backgamee in one sentence: Force your opponent to crunch his board.

Sometimes, of course, that strategy fails, and then other considerations come into play. But I suspect that most of the computer's current criticisms of your game stem from your failure to pursue the above strategy relentlessly.
