Making the 4 is less committal. You can then next split with the protection of (in most cases) a better board, hit & split (same), run a back checker, or concentrate on prime building, as the dice dictate. If you hit and split, you are risking an immediate ace, and you will have a lot of work to do if missed (hitting & covering, escaping).
