Bill - saddened by your post, however, it feels like this is most easily solvable. Get yourself a windows 8 computer, and download and install http://classicshell.net/ - this can make your computer feel like its windows 7.

Also, if the technician was at your house then he should have been able to get the files easily enough, there are enough tricks for these things. Also, if you felt so inclined, there are plenty of data recovery services out there - but they can be pricey.

Otherwise, I would recommend not throwing the towel in. Its most often a case of just getting used to new ways of doing the same things. I get that you dont want to, however, its not so bad once you get your head wrapped around it, to be honest.
