It's easy to imagine inaccuracies creeping in either in the 0-ply evaluations or the magic wand.

I think the issue would have to be in the "magic wand" rather than the 0-ply evaluations. If the magic wand were working properly, then it would give the same equity, correct or not, for double and no-double. (Assuming we haven't lost market yet.)
