Pointless doubless are not so rare. Specific scores like 4a2a often make the small advantage enough to double. A few moves later I discovered:) the score was not 4a2a but 6a4a (i.e. we played to 9 not to 7) and I said OOOPS. I was still intrigued about the Pointless double. It was clear to me during the match that I blundered because of score, but I was intrigued. Looking through the analysis I saved the position and changed the match lenght from 9 to 7 - to give you the position I posted. With only 55% wins and 17% gammons (and his 14%gammons killed) the double is right! Neil's position is similar even if different in strategic picture. The doubler wins only 53% and 16% gammons, kills 14% gammons and is near a double. This is the similarity.
For the doubler it is important to kill more enemy gammons. As important as winning his own. In fact, in both positions the combined gammons are about the average 30%. I think Danny kleinman pointed out this first, but probably Stick gave it with Neil/Rockwell gammon ratio in his Gammonvillage article. Have to check.
