You saw your backgammon results improve or you saw your backgammon PR improve? I highly doubt that the increase in results is tangible for most people when they improve from say a 9 PR to a 7 PR unless they're playing very frequently.
I don't know how many poker tournaments you would enter nor the format. The format definitely matters just as it does in backgammon. If you enter a backgammon tournament with a ton of players and it's a dmp tournament at the end of the tournament you would expect to see far less of the big names than if you had the same tournament except every match was a 25 point match. This is the same with poker. How often do the blinds go up in comparison to the average stack or chips in play? The faster they go up the quicker you get to your push n' pray no limit strategy. If you had a deep stack tournament with blinds barely budging over the length of the tournament (which would make it run extremely long and is therefore not doable) I believe you would see the same players not only make it deep but winning much more often.
There is a ton of skill in poker but once you get to a certain point, again, just like in backgammon, enough skill spread around makes the game more luck based. If you enter tournaments that are largely composed of pros and not many fish in the pool then all that skill goes to waste. When I play Neil Kaz or John O'Hagan for example is it all luck that's winning or all skill? It's basically all luck because of the skill involved by the participants.
If you stick me in a home no limit poker game don't you expect me to dominate? I do. These results I've seen. There are simply so many decent poker players in the tournaments you're entering ... I would still expect the very best players to go deep more often but if you isolate to 'winning' or maybe even final tabling that's too strict of a line.
It is good you clarified that you were speaking solely of tournament poker because I was ready to crucify you like a rec coke snorter! It keeps me thin by the way.
