I think you are missing Kit's point. In poker you have the choice of when to call and when to fold, and there is tremendous skill in making that choice, and that will have a huge bearing on how much you win or lose.
In backgammon you also have skill in deciding whether to take or pass the cube, but usually that decision is not an "all-or-nothing" decision. If you make a mistake and pass a take, unless it is a huge mistake, you are only giving away a small amount of equity, and if you take a pass, you are usually giving away only a small amount of equity. There are huge swings in the call or pass decisions and that skill alone requires tremendous skill, self-control, the ability to weigh the odds, and the ability to read your opponent.
This highlights only one area where enormous skill is required in poker, as there is also great skill required in knowing how much to bet, how quickly or slowly to bet or call, and how to use your demeanor and betting and playing habits either to fool, or at least not tip off, your opponents.
