I think you missed *my* point Phil. Obviously there is great skill in knowing when to fold a poker hand (similarly, knowing when to take or drop a cube), but Kit was seemingly implying that the reduction in exposure to luck factors after folding a poker hand meant that, ergo, there must be an increase in the skill factor, and that in backgammon, having a continual exposure to luck factors must somehow lesson the skill.

What mainly determines the skill in a game is not simply a reduction in exposure to luck, but rather, how much exposure (in total equity terms) to skillful decisions are available relative to exposure to luck factors (in total equity terms).

As it happens, I do believe there is a high degree of skill in poker - I'm just not sure how to measure it accurately, and as others here have pointed out, the definition of luck is far from straightforward.
