I think you raise a number of interesting points relating to equivalence with the chess rating system, something I do not have a feeling for as I have never played chess at any serious level.

Are you suggesting that the percentiles relating to the various norms in chess should be approximately replicated by similar percentiles in a backgammon rating system? Perhaps this would be good for players playing both chess and backgammon so that they don't sense some strange imbalance? Maybe a more pertinent question though is how many Grand Masters there should be in proportion to the other active players. I tend to think if there were a total of about 30 grand masters and above there would be much more kudos related to the title than if there were 100 or 200, but that is only my opinion.
