a.) Yeah, pretty much
2.) And even if not are you so sure this furthers the ability to determine that? It's not as though some jamoke like me has secretly been averaging a 2 PR for the last three years and this would shine a light on my undiscovered awesomeness. We know who the great players are and they will be in these categories and then artificially separated into various degrees of grandness by how well they play by the standards of a computer that (despite the PR worship around here) is not the final word in backgammon play. For instance I don't think it plays back games or containment games perfectly. Not at the level of analysis that these PRs will be determined by. Hell, I even agree with Ray's earlier post. Not necessarily the shit about how awesome he is, but that optimal winning play may well be in the 4-5 PR range. The game is about winning. Not matching the performance of a computer program. And this game has an element of luck to it. That's a feature of it. Not a bug. You all are trying to make this chess. It's not. There is the chance element and the human factor (reading your opponent to make cube decisions that would be bot blunders but that are actually designed for said opponent in mind) that can't be removed without making the game something else.
I think it's a fun masturbatory exercise (and don't get me wrong. I've been a an advocate for masturbation since about 13) but I agree with Phil that energies are better spent elsewhere.
