The two scenarios you mention for staying back opposed to moving up are rare to super rare. You are worrying about a spare on your two point for when you're hit, closed out, recubed and taken, then a point in the bear off where the third man on the two point matters?

A shot or two more immediately in cases like this don't matter as you said. It's important that you come closer to home when it's so few shots more because when you're missed you're so much more likely to get to safety or simply leave less shots next turn. That's by far the overriding priority. Decisions like this usually aren't what I'd call micropoints either. Staying back is typically bad.
