I don't have any feel for your second point, but also having played both games, I agree with your thinking that under 5 PR BG is easier to achieve than master level (> 2200 elo) in chess. I'll put an asterisk on it, though, because of the different skill sets the games require. Much is said of pattern recognition in chess, but show me a chess master who is good with patterns, and I'll show you someone who invariably also has most of the standard openings memorized several rolls deep. People who cannot or will not do that, don't reach master level in chess, but nobody has to do anything equivalent to that in backgammon. Memorizing a match equity table isn't even close in difficulty. So which is more difficult for me or you, might not be the same for someone else whose brain is wired a little differently.
