This is different than the original position because here you have more checkers in front of the open 3-point. That means you have more time to make the 3, that you can better absorb any rolls before making the 3, and that your spare position will be better during the bear-off. Depending on where you put the spare, you also will have more immediate rolls to make the 3.

You can play around with this position a bit to get a feel for the importance of the spare position. Send one spare from the 2 point back 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 pips; then both spares for a total of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 pips. Formulate what you think the correct cube action will be; then check.
