In Response To: Suggested Idea for Performance Grading (Rick Janowski)

This thread got really big and I admit I didn't read it in whole, so I appologise if I missed somthing important.

Most of you have played at an international level for a long time, so your perspective is totally different, but I'm a relatively new player and for me the general idea is really great. Let me tell you my short story to explain why.

I've played online for around 7 years now, and for the last 4 year my average online PR qualifies for at least CM here. For a long time I was thinking about going to a live tournament, but I had honestly no idea how strong it is compared to other players. I didn't even know if I should play in open division or intermediate.

3 years ago when I finally decided to go to my first live tournament (hello Barry :)) I signed up in the open and I didn't win a single match there. During the next 3 tournaments I managed to win a total of 1 match in the main event.

The only thing that kept me trying is that I bought recording equipment and started transcribing all my matches. My live PR was consistent with online PR, so I figured that if I kept playing, I would finally get past the 2nd round somewhere.

I finally managed to win something, so it's not that important anymore, but I'd still love to apply for a grade, and I'm willing to record and transcribe the matches myself.

Bottom line is that having a grade based on PR and not on tournament results is actually the easiest way for new players to achieve something in backgammon, and I think that nothing motivates better that achievement.

If you really want to attract new players, and to keep them playing, then introducing a grading level based on PR is a must, even if it'll be purely optional for players.
