I recently played someone who was using their cell phone throughout the session, I gingerly mentioned that mechanical aids are not permitted while playing backgammon. I stated that players could illegally use their phone to count pips, etc. Person stated that they were texting family, etc. I allowed them to continue this behavior which really made me uncomfortable. I copied the rule after we played that day.:
1.5 AIDS. Once a match is in progress, players shall not use written, mechanical, or electronic aids except to keep score.
( Have never played anyone who used his cell phone during match/ or money session other than to answer a call. It gives the appearance of impropriety and made me feel uncomfortable).
I will state and enforce this rule the next time I play that person.
I had made this decision before these posts, but, Colin makes a great point. If our opponent is doing something that we think violates the rules and spirit of the game,we should voice our objections ASAP.
